HOORAY! I am going to try to write a character analysis of kazato kyosuke (my insane evil husband i love him so much why is he just a one off character PLEASE GOD GIVE ME MORE OF HIM)!

Kyosuke (I will call him this bc I feel weird calling him by his first name before I really know him...perhaps I can earn that right when I am done with this) is very interesting to me because of the deep contrast between his pre-reveal and post-reveal self. This mainly comes from his role as Ran's psychiatrist throughout her bout of trauma amnesia (my fav!), a role in which he is very reasonable and soft-spoken, and very professional. There is no sense of malice or danger from him, likely because the authors wanted him to be overlooked by the audience as a suspect (AND HE WAS), especially with the multitude of suspects the police are focusing on already.

Since Kyosuke isn't ever outright said to have any connection to any of the cases, it is hard to see the twist coming, however they do drop his left handedness (when he dials the phone during the scene where Ran's mom decides to move in temporarily) as well as the fact that he transferred from the same hospital as the late Dr. Jinno (at the party), as well as mentioning that Dr. Jinno had cut another surgeon's hand during the operation that killed a heart patient. On a second watch through (technically a third for me), these clues stand out more, as well as the fact that retroactively, the pieces line up nicely...

This is a pattern I believe is common in the early works, either because Aoyama had more control or was writing tighter stories or some other similar reason. I find these earlier works more striking and intense, more emotional...It is easier for me to attach myself to them (partly due to nostalgia).

Anyways, Kyosuke is very intimidating both as a faceless figure and as a revealed villain! It was very interesting to watch him slowly go from calm and collected and methodical, not seemingly caring about much other than his goal which he was carrying out with precision and a cool head, to a vengeful, desperate, fired-up man... We see glimpses of this later unhinged persona in both Ran's flashbacks (HIS EXPRESSION!!!!! UGH) and his recounting of how he killed Dr. Jinno (in the english dub, he specifically says he felt bloodlust very calmly and matter-of-factly). I love this kind of thing, the break down of a character until they're desperate and crazy... (if you have any recommendations besides Joker please let me know!!!) He's very capable, able to drive a boat and shoot well (he even has an eyesight thing?? love it!) and is intelligent as well as physically fit. This competency, combined with the contrast in character, plus his expressions I think makes him very intimidating.

Enough media analysis though, I want to get into the meat of his character. I believe that while he's intelligent and meticulous and careful, he is still able to indulge his impulses based off of how deeply and strongly he feels emotion. The drive he had to plan several murders after already taking one life is very significant. This means he experienced what it meant to kill someone intentionally, through the heat of the moment, and have to deal with the fallout, and still chose to enact several murders at least a year later. This conviction, as well as the prolonged and complex nature of this plot leads me to believe he is a very determined and driven person, possibly a large part of why he was considered one of the best young surgeons. It feels as though his emotions grasp him and don't let go.

I think also his willingness to kill a first grader just because he's technically a witness or possibly Kyosuke's undoing is very interesting. Many people don't have the gall to do that, nor the conviction or lack of empathy. He is selfish in this regard, especially because he was going after Ran even though she had amnesia, just in case she remembered. His motivation in this case is cloudy to me. He is intelligent enough to know that even if her memories fully returned, he could've played it off easily, he said so himself when Conan confronted him. So why did he chose to kill her? Perhaps it was for more security in his safety, but it might have just been an irrational decision, perhaps an anger towards her for changing his plan or putting him in jeopardy. Especially because shooting at her and chasing her in a crowded theme park is crazy if he wants to keep his cover. I think this irrationality as well as his emotion driven nature will be useful to me in fics...

He is definitely especially emotion driven during the climax, when he shoves Conan down and intends to stab him, despite someone who could very well stop him not too far away. He could've taken Conan as a hostage, but instead immediately decides to kill him, saying (in the english dub) "Yeah. I think I'm gonna have fun with this." His desires are intense and strong, making a normally rational and intelligent man irrational and stupid. This nuance is absolutely fascinating to me because of the seemingly contradictory character actions it brings out, as well as has the potential to bring out.

Anyways that's all I have to say for now! Hope y'all enjoyed almost 1k words of character analysis from someone who's never done serious character analysis ever! I figured I'd start with Kazato (I EARNED THIS HOORAY!!!) since he's not super complex. As in there isn't much material for me to analyze compared to other characters I'm obsessed with like David and Max (camp camp) or Ninzaburo Shiratori (my autistic king...) whom I haven't gotten the chance to see all the material of. I love him sm, he's hot as hell, gonna make him fuck conan haha hooray!
